# Learning AI through play: children and parents together in Manno

On Saturday, November 14th in Manno, a two-hour free workshop will be held covering study techniques, response verification, and the future of work. Registration is subject to approval; seats are limited.

**Saturday morning, kitchen table. Your son has an essay due on Monday. He opens his laptop, types three lines into ChatGPT, and in twelve seconds, he has two pages ready. The essay is finished. The problem starts now.**

Because no one has explained to him where the line is between getting help and being replaced. And no one has explained it to you either.

The numbers show that this issue has already entered our homes. The **JAMESfocus report from ZHAW Zurich**, produced in collaboration with Swisscom and surveying 1,183 young Swiss people aged 12 to 19, shows that **71% use artificial intelligence** and 46% use it at least every two weeks. Among eighteen to nineteen-year-olds, the figure rises to 84%. Among twelve to thirteen-year-olds, it drops to 53%—and these are the children who will be entering post-compulsory education in three years.

Adults aren't just standing by. The Digimonitor survey by IGEM and WEMF, published in August, reports that 80% of Swiss people aged 15 to 75 use artificial intelligence at work or in their private lives, with ChatGPT at 67%.

Be careful how you read those figures. **Using does not mean understanding.** Many kids treat these programs like a vending machine: you insert the question, the answer comes out, end of story. No one checks if the answer holds water, and for the most part, they don't even know they should.

I’ll add a fact that few are aware of. In Switzerland, there is still no cross-sector law on artificial intelligence. The Federal Council issued a mandate in February 2025, and the preliminary draft is expected for the spring of 2027. In the meantime, the rules we already have apply, starting with the Data Protection Act. Translated into everyday life: for now, the first line of defense is the family, not the legislator.

Here comes the opportunity I want to tell you about. **Saturday, November 14, from 10:00 to 12:00, at the Suglio Auditorium in the UBS headquarters on via Cantonale in Manno**, the "Learning AI through Play" workshop will be held. It consists of two hours of activities for post-compulsory school students and their parents. Entry is free, as part of the Swiss {ai} Weeks, promoted by Ludo-formati, Linkfloyd, the AGIRE Foundation, and Splash&Spa.

This is not a conference. You work through games, challenges, and group discussions. It is led by **Dario Tognetti**, trainer and co-founder of Ludo-formati, a Ticino-based project focused on "ludodidattica"—learning through play. Joining him is **Jessica Buzzolini**, an FSP-ATP psychologist who has worked for years with young people in schools and health promotion.

Four questions are on the table. How to use AI to study better, without letting it study for them. How to notice when a chatbot hallucinates. What effects it has on concentration, memory, and self-confidence. What role it will play in the education and workforce of tomorrow. No technical skills are required; you just need curiosity and a willingness to get involved.

The detail I appreciate most is the presence of parents. In September, I reported on digiTIamo about the workshop dedicated to senior citizens in Lugano, within the same national event. Now it’s the families' turn, in the same room. Leaving artificial intelligence only in the hands of kids, or only in the hands of schools, creates the exact vacuum where errors grow.

Registration is via **luma.com/f99h3v72** and is subject to approval, as places are limited. One rule must be read carefully: minors must be registered by a parent or legal guardian using their own email, indicating the child's name and class. Adults register themselves. Participants receive a four-hour voucher for the Splash area of Splash&Spa in Rivera, to be used that same afternoon. The workshop ends at noon, and the rest of Saturday is spent at the pool.

In the meantime, here are three things to try at home this week.

**The first flips the exercise.** Instead of asking for the answer, ask for the explanation. "Explain to me how to solve this, step by step, then ask me three questions to see if I understood." Your child still does the work, and the tool becomes a private tutor instead of a ghostwriter.

**The second is verification.** Always ask where the information comes from and go verify it. Then, ask the same question in a new conversation. If the answer changes, the program was guessing. These systems make mistakes with a confidence that is chilling, and that is precisely why they are deceptive.

**The third concerns you.** Ask your child to show you how they use it. Not to police them, but to learn. Ten minutes sitting side-by-side is worth more than half an hour of lecturing, and it lets you see with your own eyes where they need a hand. Add a simple house rule: in those conversations, never enter full names, addresses, photos of documents, or health matters.

When calculators first entered classrooms, many professors cried the end of mathematics. It didn't end. The way it was taught changed. We are at the same point, with one significant difference: calculators didn't invent their results.

Saturday morning in Manno, there are people to explain this to your children—and to you—through two hours of play, without selling anything. The pool voucher is included.
